At about 7 o'clock on the morning of Saturday, April 7th, artist and devoted wife Monica Henk, 25, was carelessly mowed down by the driver of a black 1995 to 1997 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. The incident took place at the intersection of Kent Avenue and Flushing Avenue in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, NY. Mrs. Henk was driving a 2000 Yamaha motorcycle south on Kent when she was struck by the black SUV going east on Flushing. The collision tore off the front bumper of the Blazer and smashed one of its headlights. And though the motorcyclist was horribly battered, the driver of the Blazer thought of nothing but saving his or her own wretched skin from the responsibility they had so recklessly brought upon themselves. The SUV's driver sped off as the young victim lay dead at the scene. The EMS corp arrived quickly and was able to partially revive Monica and she was rushed to Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center where she remained, unfortunately, completely unresponsive and in a coma. She couldn't breathe on her own, nor respond to touch or pain. Doctors said at the time she had a one in ten chance of survival. And two days later, her condition worsened to the point where her family had no alternative except to sign documents to turn off life support. The suddenness of their loss is overwhelming. If you have any information about this accident or the vehicle in question, all of us at the Gazette, everyone Dan and Monica know, and all decent people everywhere want you to contact New York State Crimestoppers at 800-577-TIPS or Dan Henk at 917-554-1341. The family is accepting donations and offering a reward for any information leading to the capture of the hit-and-run driver. The amount of the reward is now $18,000. Any donations should be made to dan@danhenk.com with "Monica Henk Charity Fund" in the subject.
